Foley Area C.A.R.E.
(Creating Appreciation and Reciprocity with Elders)
About us ...
Our Vision
The aging neighbors of our community will live longer, happier, and meaningful lives.
Mission Statement
Thru direct services and referrals we support our Foley neighbors 60 and older to continue living in the home of their choice.
No one disputes that given a choice, our elders usually prefer staying in their own home as long as possible. More often than not, quality of life is the reason for remaining there, with the benefit of a multi-generational community enjoying the wisdom, experience and roots of its elders.
With that in mind, the Foley Area C.A.R.E. (Creating Appreciation and Reciprocity with Elders) Program, a Living At Home/Block Nurse Program (SM), has been established. As an affiliate of the Elderberry Institute, the program has access to over 15 years of collected resources to utilize.
The Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program geographically serves people age 60 and over that reside in Benton County within a 10 mile radius of the city of Foley, Minnesota. It is a neighborhood based service using professional and volunteer personnel that coordinate the appropriate agencies and resources to provide for health and social services needed by residents that are age 60 and older. The Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program began in the fall of 2002 after informational meeting with Sue Reinert, a community coach through the Central Minnesota Council on Aging. A steering committee was formed including Pastor Allen Jergenson, Foley Mayor Paul Blaszak, Ruth DuHamel, Diana Graining, Deb Karraker, Betty Mastey, Carole Mersinger, Virginia Peschl and Lorane Walsh. As the development of the program progressed, Carol Batterton, Richard Balder, Elaine Balder, Carol Barringer, Joan Bauman, Alice Engelmeyer, Karen Kackley and Mary Kaproth were added to the Board of Directors. In early February of 2003, Susan Secord was hired as Program Director to administer and provide leadership within the community under the direction of the Board of Directors. Susan provided outstanding leadership in her service to our organization as program director. However, due to budgetary concerns brought about as a result of changes in funding because of state budget cuts, Susan is no longer serving as Program Director.
In October of 2003, our organization hired Janis Brown to be the new Program Director.
To begin the program, a community services development grant of $19,640 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2003, was granted from the State of Minnesota. In addition, a $1,500 cash donation was also obtained. The C.R.O.S.S. Center served as the non-profit fiscal agent for Foley Area C.A.R.E. until the CARE program received their own non-profit status. The C.R.O.S.S. Center also donated office space for the CARE program until January 12, 2007, when CARE moved into the vacant police chief’s office located in city hall. Pastor Al Jergenson from the First Presbyterian Church of Foley says, "Budget cuts at the state and federal level, coupled with the nursing home closures and increasing population of elders who require services to remain in their home has created even more of a need of community support."
The very heart of the Foley Area C.A.R.E. Program is volunteerism. The volunteers will assist with a variety of needs, including:
- Transportation to and from Medical Appointments / shopping
- Assisting with Paperwork such as explaining Medicare
- Matching Friends (multigenerational activities)
- Homemaking/Chore Services
- Community Health Fairs may be provided
